Cattle Market Outlook & Risk Management Tools - Dr. Stephen Koontz, Colorado State University

Stephen Koontz is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University.  He works in the areas of commodity marketing, risk management, market price analysis, and agribusiness industrial organization. 

His interests are in commercial agriculture production and marketing and the functioning agribusinesses.  His responsibilities at Colorado State University include outreach, teaching, and research.

Fundamentals of Feeding the Gestating Cow - Troy Walz, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension

Troy Walz has been a faculty member with the University of Nebraska since 1998.  His focus area is Beef Systems.  A few of the programs he works with are the Nebraska Ranch Practicum, UNL Beef Basics Homestudy courses, Fundamentals of Feeding the Cow webinar series, and has been the editor of UNL BeefWatch e-newsletter for ten years.  Troy grew up on a ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska, where he is still involved in the operation.

Colorado Department of Agriculture Update - Dr. Maggie Baldwin, Colorado State Veterinarian

Dr. Maggie Baldwin joined the Colorado Department of Agriculture in January 2017, serving in several roles before being appointed as the Colorado State Veterinarian in May 2021. 

In this position she manages CDA’s Animal Health Division through planning, directing and executing all programs, policies and cooperative agreements with other governmental agencies.

Dr. Baldwin focuses her efforts on the implementation of secure food supply plans and emergency response plans, enhanced animal disease traceability, education, and robust stakeholder engagement. 

Dr. Baldwin earned her DVM from the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul.  She began her career in public service as a Supervisory Public Health Veterinarian with USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and also served as a Veterinary Medical Officer with USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Weather Outlook - Brian Bledsoe, Chief Meteorologist/Climatologist, Brian Bledsoe Weather

Brian Bledsoe is the founder and Chief Meteorologist/Climatologist for Brian Bledsoe Weather. His private weather consulting business has been serving farmers, ranchers, and many other businesses for the past 25 years.

Recently retired from television, many of you may also know Brian from having been a broadcast meteorologist for the past 28 years.

Brian's goal is to help farmers and ranchers make their business more successful by equipping them with actionable forecast information, both short term and long term.

His strong background in agriculture is important, as he can directly relate to the producer and their specific needs. Brian has several clients in the Great Plains as well as the whole United States.

He is regularly featured by many media outlets, speaks at many agriculture conferences, and is constantly advocating for farmers and ranchers.
