ALLEN (AL) SMITH

Posted

Allen (Al) Smith was born February 26, 1951, to William R. and Donna L (Clark) Smith in Canon City, Colorado.

Al’s dad worked in road construction so the family moved frequently finally settling in Boulder Colorado.

It was there, when Al was 14, that a 13 year old girl caught his eye. She was impressed with his motorcycle and his smile and that was the beginning of an almost six decades long love affair.

Al and Deb married on June 6, 1970 and welcomed their beautiful daughter, Phaedra Ali, in April of the next year. In 1996, Deb’s nephew Chris Lakey came to stay for the summer, fell in love with Hugo and stayed on to finish high school. He became like a son to Al and Deb.

Al retired in 2002 and soon took up several hobbies to keep busy. He enjoyed woodworking specializing in building furniture from reclaimed wood. He was especially proud of the bar that he built for his beloved grandson’s wedding reception.

Al was also very proud of the results of his efforts to spruce up the Hugo Public Library. He raised funds from local businesses and donated his time to build all new shelving for the children’s section and end caps for all the rest of the shelves.

Al is survived by his wife of 54 years Deborah, his daughter Phaedra Piper, son in law Anthony (Andy) Piper, grandson Jacob Piper, granddaughter-in-law Krista Piper, great-grandson Stark Piper, nephew Chris Lakey and brother Richard Smith of Phoenix Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Michael and Don.

He was a kind, quiet and gentle man and will be greatly missed.

Memorial contributions should be sent to the Hugo Public Library to help fund the summer readingprogram.

No public services are being planned at this time. Friends and family can register online condolences and sign the guestbook at www.brownfuneraldirectors.com . Final arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home in Hugo.
