On February 7th, a cold and foggy day,
A boy was born in Hugo, his name, Gary Ray.
We took him to the farm, his home to be,
there he met his big sister, Wendy Lee.
They grew up together, playing and having fun.
Sure, they didn’t tell Mom and Dad, all that they had done.
In school, a good athlete he became,
fullback in football, pitcher in baseball, was his game.
He started playing golf when he was very young,
I can’t count all the junior and men’s tournaments he won.
At Goodland Tech, Welding and Diesel Mechanic were his degrees.
On the farm, he would use both of these.
Gary and Jodi’s wedding vows they did say,
to this union came Ty and Shae.
As a rancher he put together a real nice herd,
while working these cows, some forbidden words, might be heard.
Farming is all he ever wanted to do.
Growing wheat, proso, and hay, for the cows too.
He was a man with a big smile and heart.
When someone needed help, from his work, he would part.
Just before Christmas, a time to be merry,
The good Lord said, “I need you Gary.”
We can’t believe, and still wonder why...
and worst of all, we never got to say goodbye.
Though our working and playing together is done,
I am still so very proud to say, “You’re my son.”
