Zion Lutheran Church ELCA 100 Years Serving With Joy 1925 – 2025

Posted

On January 22, 1945, a small group of believers gathered with a vision to establish a place of worship, prayer and community.

A few Lutheran ladies met at the home of Mrs. Soren Benson to organize a Ladies Aid known as The English Lutheran Ladies Aid of Limon.  In March they rented the I.O.O.F Lodge Hall, currently the Hub Senior Center, for Sunday School and Christian fellowship.

The church was organized on October 19, 1925, as the Zion English Evangelical Lutheran Congregation.  In 1927 the ladies purchased the lot where Zion now stands for $450.

In March 1940, a building committee met to plan the construction of the church. Lawrence Andersen, Forrest Yarian and Frank Voight composed that committee.  It was decided to build a cinder block and timber church.

The beautiful arched beams inside the church were handmade by Forrest Yarian in his backyard and remain a beautiful testimony to his skill.

Ground was broken on May 6, 1940.  The project represented an investment of approximately $7,000.  From these humble beginnings, Zion Lutheran Church was founded, dedicated on April 27, 1941

The last twenty-five years have seen many improvements to our church building.  The church has new stucco siding, new paint throughout, new flooring, new kitchen, a new organ, new roof, and beautiful stained-glass windows created by Margie Lohmeier.

All original woodwork and pews remain as well as our pride and joy, the bell tower, which you can hear ring every Sunday morning at 10 o’clock.

Zion is served by pastors, Dan Bollman, Rob Kuehner, Karen Matuska, Ron Powers and Dena Williams, each delivering the good news and providing spiritual leadership.

Our centennial theme, “Serving with Joy”, captures both our history and our hope.  For a century members have joyfully given their time, talents and hearts to God’s service.  As we step into the next hundred years, we remain committed to carrying out the mission of our original founding members.

As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we honor the past with gratitude, embrace the present with joy and step into the future with hope.  Psalm 126:3  “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy”.

The community is invited to a reception on October 19, 2025, at 1:00 pm at the Limon Community Building to help Zion celebrate this special occasion.
